Self-Portrait Drawing
Unit Objective: gain dramatic improvement of skills in observational drawing
Unit final assessment: comparison of benchmark self-portrait to final self-portrait
Standards addressed: TEKS 117.53 perception & creative expression/performance
Materials needed: drawing pencil 6-9B, mechanical pencil, eraser, pen eraser, masking tape, drawing paper, bristol board, blending stump, sharpener, graphite powder, chamois, scrap paper, red pen
#1 Lesson : Benchmark self-portrait
Objective: assessment of current observational skill level
#2 Lesson: discussion of perception and seeing, left side & right side of the brain :online quiz, vase-face exercise
Objective: Understand how perception effects observation
#3 Lesson: Upside down drawing of Picasso’s Igor Stravinsky Drawing
Objective: apply concept of perception of shapes & lines instead of known symbol system
Assessment: upside down drawing accuracy
#4 Lesson: Review right brain vs. left brain & how perception effects drawing through questioning strategies. Blind contour exercise of hand’s palm lines.
Objective: practice blind contour as means of focusing on ‘seeing’ in drawing, learn & apply knowledge of ‘finding edges(line contour)’
Assessment: group critique of drawing at end of class
#5 Lesson: Discovering the picture plane. Make a view finder w/ cross hairs to develop compositional awareness.
Objective: discover what a viewfinder is, make one & use it as a drawing aide.
#6 Lesson: Use viewfinder to define composition of leaves, then draw onto final paper
Objective: draw outer edges of objects to create a balanced composition.
#7 Lesson: explore negative & positive space, create a value grid using cross-hatching
Objective: define negative & positive space, demonstrate understanding of cross-hatching to achieve value
Assessment: value grid using value to show 5 gradations
#8 Lesson: use crosshatching to create value in negative space of composition.
Objective: create a balanced, finished composition showing cross-hatching and negative/positive space
Assessment: finished leaves composition
#9 Lesson: create a ground using graphite powder, tape & chamois cloth
Objective: learn how to create a mid tone to start a composition
Assessment: finished, taped off mid tone on Bristol board
#10 Lesson: Value grid w/ 9 steps
Objective: show a clear gradation of values in 9 steps with minimal marks
Assessment: finished value grid
#11 Lesson: Hand composition using value
Objective: demonstrate replication of light & shadow on a hand using accurate proportion, graphite & minimal mark-making to emphasize value
Assessment: finished hand drawing
#12 Lesson: Generic facial features & facial proportions
Objective: understand & replicate basic human facial proportions and anatomical facial features
Assessment: accurate replication of eyes, nose, mouth correctly proportionate on face through drawing
#13 Lesson: Create a final self-portrait
Objective: create a finished Finish Self -Portrait with correct proportion, full value range and accurate likeness
Assessment: accuracy of final portrait
Procedure:
*Use Photobooth & iPhoto to create a portrait in black & white with strong contrast, print to size for enlargement
*Use grid for drawing & enlarging self-portrait
*Lightly draw contour lines of edges of image
*Add and reduce grays to create the 3D form of the face
*Add details into facial features
*Build full values throughout picture plane
*Add background reflecting light source use cross-hatching if applicable
*Finish Self -Portrait & spray fix, remove taped edges for border
